An evening length song cycle by Rachel Grimes, Angélica Negrón, Shara Nova, Caroline Shaw and Sarah Kirkland Snider, set to excerpts from 2017 Windham-Campbell Prize winner Carolyn Forché’s epic abecedarian poem, “On Earth”. The music follows one woman’s journey through the liminal space between life and death via thousands of hallucinatory and non-linear images.

In celebration of Family History Month, please join the African American Genealogy Group of Kentucky and the Kentucky Historical Society for this FREE joint virtual event: “Celebrating Untold Stories of Early Kentucky Families” – panel session and film premier – on October 16th, 1-2:30pm, to be hosted via Zoom.

The event includes access to the 30 minute short documentary “Along the Way Forth:  Unraveling Dominion” which explores the compelling story of four generations of the Hart family, beginning with recent research into the long life of Dolly, an enslaved woman who was one of the initial settlers at Fort Boonesborough. Viewing of the film will take place via a private YouTube link and attendees are encouraged to view the film prior to the event.

7 – 9 PM    Opening event of the Jug Band Jubilee, this panel discussion on Black fiddlers will explore the contributions of Kentuckiana musicians like bandleader Henry Hart, Clifford Hayes of the Louisville Jug Band, the Booker Family Orchestra, and Jess Ferguson of Whistler’s Jug Band. The event will also feature live music and a cash bar. Admission is free, but there is a suggested donation of $10 to benefit Roots 101.

April 11, 2021 Henry Hart: Music Along the Riverways 4 PM - FREE online event hosted by Kentucky Performing Arts & Louisville Folk School

Composer Rachel Grimes, educator Dr. Clark Kimberling, and historian Michael L. Jones explore the legacy of celebrated, Kentucky-born violinist, composer, and bandleader Henry Hart (1839 – 1915). Hart was the grandson of an enslaved woman who participated in the March 1775 expedition to build Fort Boonesborough, one of the earliest non-indigenous settlements in Kentucky. Hart began his musical career playing on steamboats along the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers, but went on to lead the most popular society bands in Indianapolis.

Mana Talks are a curated series of public workshops, lectures, and conversations hosted by noteworthy artists across creative fields at MANA Contemporary. The first season of talks will follow the theme of “The Muse,” in which artists discuss their sources of inspiration.   Rachel will discuss the compositional process behind the group’s 1996 album, Music for Egon Schiele and will perform excerpts and themes from this suite for viola, cello, and piano.  Free and open to the public.  3 PM
